The Challenge Facing Broadcast Operations

Your Facility Runs on SDI. IP Is Coming. You Need a Path That Protects Both.

The Problem

82% of broadcast operations still run SDI as their primary backbone. The pressure to transition to SMPTE ST 2110 is real — but so is the operational risk of moving too fast. Every vendor wants you to replace everything. Your budget, your on-air schedule, and your engineering team say otherwise.

A single network disruption in an all-IP facility means complete signal loss. That is not a risk broadcast operations can accept.

The Utah Scientific Approach

Utah Scientific builds the gateway directly into the SDI routing fabric. SDI and ST 2110 IP signals coexist in the same chassis, managed by the same control system. If anything on the IP side fails — including a switch control system crash — critical feeds remain live through the dedicated SDI path automatically.

No rip-and-replace. No parallel infrastructure. No single point of failure. Transition at the pace that's right for your operation.

UTAH-400 Series 2 hybrid SDI router — upgradeable to ST 2110 with PassThrough cards

Best for: Adding IP to Existing Infrastructure

UTAH-400 Series 2 with PassThrough Cards

If you have an existing UTAH-400 Series 2 chassis, hybrid ST 2110 capability can be added incrementally using PassThrough cards in standard I/O slots. No chassis replacement required. The SDI routing fabric continues operating throughout, with a continuous fallback path regardless of IP network state.

  • Frame sizes: 72×72, 144×144, 288×288, 528×528, 1056×1056
  • Hot-swappable modular I/O — add IP incrementally, by slot
  • Covered by Utah Scientific's no-fee 10-year hardware warranty on routers

What Customers Say

Trusted by Broadcast Operations Worldwide

"The first and most important element in our decision to renew with Utah Scientific was our current router's dependability. It ran 24/7, 365 for nine years, with no failures: whether power supply failures or control failures. There was never a need to reboot the router."

— Craig Jutson, City of San José

"The opportunity to not pay for the equipment a second time through 10 years' worth of support contracts was a no-brainer. In the first five years, I've had nothing but great experiences when dealing with the support team."

— Aaron Jones, WCMU Public Media

"Not only does the router come with Utah Scientific's no-fee, 10-year warranty — unheard of in the broadcast industry — but it's based on a unique hybrid signal architecture that offers a single platform for all types of signals, including those used in IP networks."

— Chuck Heffner, Digital Video Group

"As a well-known provider of dependable, worry-free routers with the world's best warranty, Utah Scientific was an easy choice to supply the routers for this value-added solution."

— Peter Schut, SVP Media Infrastructure, EVS

The Architecture Difference

One Chassis. Two Signal Worlds. Zero Compromise on Reliability.

The conventional approach to hybrid SDI/IP routing requires external gateway devices between your SDI router and your IP network — adding rack space, power draw, latency risk, and one more point of failure in a chain where failure isn't an option.

Utah Scientific embeds gateway functionality directly within the SDI routing fabric via PassThrough cards. The system maintains a physical SDI connection for continuous signal flow, so if the IP control system or network fabric encounters any disruption — including a switch control system crash — critical feeds remain live through the dedicated SDI path. No operator intervention required.

SDI failsafe: hardware-level, always live regardless of IP network state
In-frame gateway: encapsulation/de-encapsulation inside the router frame — no external hardware
Single control surface: SDI crosspoints and ST 2110 flows managed from the same interface
PTP compliant: clocking not required; simultaneous ST 2110 timing and legacy Black Burst

NBOSS software-based NMOS control for hybrid SDI/IP broadcast routing

NBOSS: Switch ST 2110 flows as simply as SDI, from familiar Utah Scientific panel interfaces.

NMOS Control

NBOSS: Switch ST 2110 as Simply as SDI

NBOSS is Utah Scientific's software-based NMOS IS-04/IS-05 control solution, launched Q4 2025. It enables operators to manage IP flows with the same simplicity and operational familiarity as SDI, using existing Utah Scientific hardware panels (SC-4, SC-40, SC-400), Soft-LC, and WebPanel interfaces.

For IT directors and systems engineers working with REST API-based control architecture, NBOSS provides NMOS IS-04 device discovery and IS-05 connection management without requiring a separate third-party NMOS controller.

"NBOSS simplifies hybrid workflows, reduces reliance on third-party systems, and makes our Series 2 routers and OnRamp devices even more versatile. This isn't just a new control tool — it's a foundational step toward full IP domain integration."

— Brett Benson, CEO, Utah Scientific
