UTAH-100/UDS Universal Distribution System

Multi-Format. Modular. Scalable.

The UTAH-100/UDS merges crosspoint-based switching with the economics of a distribution amplifier. Three frame sizes — from 32x32 up to 144x144 — share a common modular architecture, letting you match the system to the facility rather than the other way around.

A crosspoint fabric where every output is individually addressable

Most distribution amplifiers send the same signal everywhere. The UTAH-100/UDS works differently. Its modular I/O architecture — built on 16-port cards interconnected by a crosspoint fabric — lets engineers assign any input to any output independently. Three frame sizes scale from a 32x32 matrix in 1RU to a 144x144 matrix in 4RU, with support for SD, HD, 3Gbps SDI, fiber, analog, DVI/HDMI, and IP-encapsulated DVB-ASI through the FLEX-I/O option. One platform covers the full range of signal types found in a modern facility.

Broadcast Facilities

Central apparatus rooms handling mixed SD and HD signals can consolidate distribution across a single modular frame. The output grouping feature lets operators switch entire studio bays or edit suites with a single command, reducing the risk of partial routing errors during live operations.

Post Production & Dubbing

Post houses and dubbing facilities benefit from per-output signal assignment and the ability to group output blocks. A single source — reference black, color bars, or a program feed — can be routed to multiple bays simultaneously, without the fixed topology constraints of a conventional DA.

Remote & Distributed Sites

Facilities where operators cannot be physically present rely on the built-in web interface and optional Ethernet-connected hardware panels for full remote control. The optional MX-Bus module allows a UDS frame to integrate directly into a larger SC-4 system, extending control across geographically distributed infrastructure.

Product Overview

Crosspoint Switching. Distribution Amplifier Economy.

The UTAH-100/UDS is built around 16-port I/O modules interconnected by a crosspoint fabric. Any input can drive as many outputs as needed — and because each output is individually assignable, you get routing flexibility at distribution amplifier pricing. A 4RU frame supports a 144x144 matrix drawing less than 100W.

Standard I/O modules use HD-BNC connectors for high-density multi-rate digital signals from 3Mbps to 3Gbps, with reclocking on all SDI rates. When the application calls for fiber, HDMI/DVI, analog video, or IP-encapsulated DVB-ASI, those same slots accept FLEX I/O modules fitted with 8 dual-port SFP cages — no new frame required.

Three frame sizes scale from a 1RU 32x32 to a 4RU 144x144. Each frame carries dual DC power inputs, a Reference Video input for vertical interval switching, and a controller module with Ethernet and Serial ports. Swapping that controller for an MX-Bus module integrates the UDS directly into an SC-4 system.

Available in three frame sizes: 1RU (32x32), 2RU (64x64), and 4RU (144x144) — all sharing the same I/O module ecosystem.

  • Multi-rate digital I/O cards: 16 ports per card, HD-BNC, 3Mbps–3Gbps
  • FLEX I/O modules: fiber, HDMI/DVI, analog composite, IP-encapsulated DVB-ASI
  • Built-in web interface with output block grouping for dubbing and edit bay switching
  • Optional UDS-CP2 (32 programmable buttons) or UDS-XY full-matrix hardware panels
  • iPad app control via Wi-Fi with automatic configuration and label download

Key Capabilities

Built for Any Signal Format, Any Facility Size

Crosspoint Fabric Architecture

A non-blocking crosspoint matrix connects every input to every output. Any source can feed multiple destinations simultaneously, and individual output assignment gives you precise control without dedicated DA hardware.

Multi-Rate SDI with Reclocking

Standard I/O cards handle any SDI rate from 3Mbps to 3Gbps, including DVB-ASI. Input equalization exceeds 100m on Belden 1694 cable, and reclocking is applied at all SDI rates to maintain signal integrity across long signal chains.

FLEX I/O Modular Expansion

Replace standard HD-BNC cards with 8-cage SFP modules to add fiber, HDMI/DVI, PAL/NTSC analog composite, or IP-encapsulated DVB-ASI — all within the same frame slots. Mixed coax and fiber configurations are fully supported.

Three Scalable Frame Sizes

Choose from a 1RU 32x32 drawing under 30W, a 2RU 64x64 under 50W, or a 4RU 144x144 under 100W. All three share the same I/O module ecosystem and control architecture, so expanding to a larger frame preserves your existing investment.

Output Block Grouping

The web interface lets you group output ports into named blocks. A single route command then pushes any input to the entire block — a practical time-saver for dubbing suites, edit bays, and studio systems where reference signals need to switch together.

Flexible Control Options

Control from a web browser, the UDS-CP2 panel with 32 programmable buttons, the UDS-XY full-matrix panel with high-resolution display, or the Utah Scientific iPad app via Wi-Fi. Ethernet and Serial ports are standard on every frame controller.

What Engineers Are Saying

The UTAH-400 was a great choice for the upgrade. Not only does the router come with Utah Scientific's no-fee, 10-year warranty — unheard of in the broadcast industry — but it's based on a unique hybrid signal architecture that offers a single platform for all types of signals.

Chuck Heffner Digital Video Group

Based on our ongoing and successful partnership with Utah Scientific, we already have firsthand experience with the company's engineering excellence, product reliability, and first-rate service and support.

Todd Mason Founder & CEO, Broadcast Media Group

The first and most important element in our decision to renew was our current router's dependability. It ran 24/7, 365 for nine years, with no failures — no power supply failures, no control failures, no need to reboot.

Frequently Asked Questions

The UTAH-100/UDS is available in three frame sizes: a 1RU frame with a 32x32 matrix (under 30W), a 2RU frame with a 64x64 matrix (under 50W), and a 4RU frame with a 144x144 matrix (under 100W). All are 19-inch rack-mount and 3.4 inches deep.

The standard multi-rate digital I/O cards handle signals from 3Mbps up to 3Gbps, covering SD-SDI, HD-SDI, 3G-SDI, and DVB/ASI. With the FLEX-I/O option, you can add SDI over fiber or coax, PAL/NTSC analog composite, DVI/HDMI, and IP-encapsulated DVB-ASI streams — all selectable per port.

Standard multi-rate digital input and output cards use HD-BNC connectors. This choice maximises port density per card and maintains signal integrity across all supported data rates, from SD through 3G-SDI.

A built-in web interface handles configuration, monitoring, and routing from any browser. Two optional hardware panels extend local control: the UDS-CP2 offers 32 programmable buttons across multiple pages, while the UDS-XY provides full-matrix control with a high-resolution scrolling display suited to the 144x144 configuration. A Utah Router Control App for iPad adds wireless control wherever a Wi-Fi connection to the controller is available.

Yes. The controller module in each frame can be swapped for an MX-Bus module, allowing the UDS frame to operate as a component within a Utah Scientific SC-4 system when larger, centralised control is required.

Through the web interface, any combination of output ports can be grouped into a named output block. From that point, a single routing selection sends any chosen input to every port in the block simultaneously. This is particularly practical in dubbing facilities and wherever reference signals need to reach an entire studio or edit bay in one action.

Each frame uses an external DC power supply with a dual DC input connection. Redundant power supply is available as an option for installations requiring continuous uptime.

The UTAH-100/UDS is covered by Utah Scientific's 10-year limited hardware warranty at no additional fee. This stands well beyond what is standard practice in the broadcast industry and reflects the company's confidence in the product's long-term reliability.
